The Power of Prayer

The Power of Prayer

Introduction

I have a superpower. A real, live, actual superpower.

It’s called prayer.

The power of prayer is incredible. Because when you pray, you’re speaking directly to the God who made the universe, the one who works miracles, who has a plan for your good. And when you pray, He answers. It might not always be a yes. Sometimes it feels like He doesn’t answer at all, like He doesn’t hear you, but he does. Remember–

But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Mathew 10:30-31 ESV

God, the same God who created the universe, knows every hair on your head. Of course He listens to your prayers, and He always answers. Now, what does this have to do with writing?

Everything.

Let me explain.

Explanation

I was in a writing slump for a long time recently. Sons of Starborn sat untouched. I dragged book reviews out of the far reaches of my mind and pinned them onto the page before they could escape. Brain-dead and numb, I spent hours staring blankly at the screen over the period of a few weeks.

I attended the Realm Makers Conference, hoping this would lift me out of the mire. It did, somewhat. But a few days I was once again trapped in the sludge of a weary mind. I could not write for the life of me.

I don’t remember exactly how it happened. Perhaps it was a devotional I read, or a post by a fellow writer, or a Christian craft book. Likely, it was from some source provided by YWW (The Young Writer’s Workshop). Anyway, I heard somewhere, somehow, about praying over your writing. I remember reading (or hearing? *shrug*) that it was okay to pray to God about your writing, no matter how trivial it seemed.

So I gave it a shot.

Sitting in front of my dad’s laptop, tea steaming on one side and notebooks scattered on the other, blue light glasses perched on my nose, I opened up to God. It felt a little strange, praying about my writing, but it also felt right. Raw and real, like any other prayer deep from the heart.

And I wrote nearly 1,500 words that day.

Conclusion

Now, a little while later, I pray over my writing whenever I’m struggling, whenever I open up that document and know it’s going to be a tough time. When I’m pumped and bouncing, when I’m weary and numb. I pray. Even when I’m not writing.

And you know what? I write a thousand words every day. I’m almost halfway through the second draft of my novel. I pump out book reviews and other posts, and my novel’s path forward has never been clearer. Just the past few days, my writing has been flowing like a river from the constant, steady spring of faith in God.

All to say that a little prayer goes a long way. So just keep praying and trust God to work His miracles.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

Oh my goodness, I never thought about praying over my writing. I feel like I keep my author stuff very separate from my prayer stuff. This really made me realize I should have God more in my author life. can’t wait for your book to come out! ❤️❤️❤️
